THE FRIDAY LIST: PLATT PARK QUIETLY DOES BRUNCH BETTER THAN THE NEIGHBORHOODS THAT BRAG ABOUT IT
Sunday mornings in my family had an order to them, and the order was not negotiable. Market first, because my mother did not trust a grocery store to tell the truth about fish. Then whichever bakery she had decided was acceptable that month, a designation that could be revoked without warning. Then home, where I carried everything in from the car, because that is the job of the eldest daughter and nobody took a vote on it.
I never shook the order. I just moved it south. Most Sundays now I am on South Pearl Street in Platt Park, running my mother's route with worse posture and better coffee. Platt Park does not advertise itself as a brunch neighborhood. It is six walkable blocks, a Sunday market, three genuinely great Japanese restaurants within a block of each other, and a visible lack of interest in being discovered. Which is exactly why brunch here beats the neighborhoods that put the word on a sandwich board out front.
The brunch I actually take people to
Bird — 1529 S Pearl St
Weekend service starts at 9:30 in the morning and breakfast runs until four in the afternoon, which is the single most civilized policy on this street. Get the Nashville hot chicken if you want to be honest with yourself, a benedict if you have somewhere to be afterward. The dining room is small, so you either go early or you turn up at two like an adult who plans ahead. This is the one I bring clients to after a Sunday showing, because nobody has ever been talked out of a house over a good plate of fried chicken.
Coffee first, and occasionally coffee instead
Stella's Coffee Haus — 1476 S Pearl St | Steam Espresso Bar — 1801 S Pearl St
Stella's lives in an old house with a porch and opens at seven every day, and it is where I go when I need to actually think rather than perform thinking. The bakery case comes from Spruce Confections up in Boulder. Fair warning that half the porch is people with laptops, and on a bad day I am one of them. Steam is at the far south end with a patio friendlier to dogs than to laptops, and it is the right call if the plan is to keep walking.
The bakery that will ruin supermarket bread for you
Tokyo Premium Bakery — 1540 S Pearl St
The milk bread is the thing. I brought a loaf to my mother, who ate a slice, said nothing at all, and took a second slice, which from her is a standing ovation with flowers thrown. Go early on a Sunday — the good stuff is gone before the market crowd thins out, and I have twice arrived to a very apologetic shrug. If it puts you in the mood for more, Spirit of Japan Denver runs September 18 to 20 at Sakura Square downtown, fifteen dollars at the gate.
Brunch that isn't eggs, which is frequently the better brunch
Ototo — 1501 S Pearl St | Chook Charcoal Chicken — 1300 S Pearl St
Ototo does a Sunday lunch from eleven to two, and walking off the farmers market straight into a bowl of ramen is the best-kept move on this entire street. Chook is open eleven to eight every day and I order the same thing every time: quarter chicken, dark meat, the charred vegetables with the tahina. It is not brunch in any formal sense. It is what I want at one in the afternoon, which I have decided counts.
Worth knowing while you are here: Sushi Den and Izakaya Den share 1487 S Pearl St and do not open until evening. Plan dinner now, not at seven when you are hungry and hopeful.
When brunch declines to end
Platt Park Brewing — 1875 S Pearl St | Uno Mas Taqueria y Cantina — 1585 S Pearl St
Platt Park Brewing is the neighborhood's living room and behaves like it, which means you will end up talking to somebody's dog and somebody's contractor. Uno Mas is the patio where a one o'clock margarita becomes a four o'clock margarita, and I am not going to pretend I have never let that happen.
A detour worth taking
The South Pearl Street Farmers Market takes over the 1400 and 1500 blocks between Iowa and Arkansas every Sunday from nine to one, running through November 8 this year. It is less a shopping errand than a slow promenade where the whole neighborhood turns out and pretends the walk was about vegetables. Nine if you want produce, eleven if you want the scene. While you are on that stretch, 5 Green Boxes is the shop I have never once managed to leave empty-handed, a character flaw I have made peace with.
What it actually costs to live here
The median sale price in 80210, the ZIP covering Platt Park along with Wash Park West and University, was roughly $964,600 in August 2026 — about $432 a square foot, with homes going under contract in a median of 19 days. That is a real number and it does not pretend otherwise. What it buys varies wildly block to block: a 1920s bungalow that has been loved, one that has been ignored, or a new duplex half standing where an ignored one used to be. The blocks nearest South Pearl carry a premium for exactly the reason you are reading this post.
If you want to walk it properly some Sunday, I will show you which blocks are worth that premium and which ones are quietly better value three streets over. Bring an appetite. I will handle the parking.
